Cesar Millan Explains How Dog Lovers Create Anxiety in Dogs

Cesar Milan Details How People Confuse Their Dogs

Television's favorite canine behaviorist Cesar Millán is on the road this summer for another round of his celebrated educational live shows.

During the show, Millán talks to dog lovers about mistakes they might be making in the training of their beloved pets. He shows and tells his audiences how better understand their canine friends, and how to help dogs overcome bad habits.

"You know, people not only learn but they laugh about it," Millán tells the Maria's Mutts & Stuff podcast, hosted by Q104.3 New York's Maria Milito. "I am a big believer [that] life is simple; we make it complicated.

The Dog Whisperer says the number one thing he tries to convey during his live shows is how to project calmness. He says there's no better starting point when it comes to training any animal.

"It's extremely helpful for learning, for healing, for listening," he tells the show, "and that's one thing that dog people don't practice because dog people like excited dogs."

Millán says dogs need to have fun like any other creature, but they must know when it's appropriate.

"There are gyms for children, so the kid goes to exercise. And there are moments when the kid has to sleep at this time. That's called structure, that's called discipline. We feed them good food, we tell them what people to approach, what people to not approach..."

But dogs are babied from the time they are puppies to when they grow up. It's a transition that happens within the first year of their lives!

Dogs need to be able to do three things, Millán says: "Follow, play, explore."

One of the most obvious signs of a poorly-trained dog is the dog's behavior on a walk. Millán says walks are about following first and foremost, not exploring.

"When you see people walking [dogs] in the street, most of the people, the dogs are in the front. So the dogs are either exploring, or if they see another dog they want to play."
