Queen Elizabeth II is making a big change. The long-reigning monarch isn't one to chase fashion trends, instead preferring a classically chic wardrobe. However, she's recently decided to give one increasingly popular tend a try. Following in the footsteps of prominent designer brands, such as Gucci, Versace and Michael Kors, the Queen has decided to forgo wearing fur from now on.
The revelation about Queen Elizabeth's decision to step away from fur, which she has worn consistently throughout her reign, was revealed in her longtime personal advisor and official dresser's new memoir. In the memoir, Angela Kelly writes "If Her Majesty is due to attend an engagement in particularly cold weather, from 2019 onwards fake fur will be used to make sure she stays warm." The Queen also removed the mink fur trim from one of her favorite coats as a symbolic gesture, according to Kelly.
While Kelly asserts the monarch will no longer wear any fur, an anonymous palace aide walked those comments back a bit while talking to The Telegraph. “As new outfits are designed for the Queen, any fur used will be fake,” the insider explained. "The Queen will continue to re-wear existing outfits in her wardrobe," which means any outfit that already has fur will continue to be a part of Queen Elizabeth's wardrobe.
Whether the Queen forgoes fur completely in the future or simply stops bringing more fur into her already existing wardrobe, animal welfare activists are happy with this development either way. "We are thrilled that Her Majesty has officially gone fur-free. Queen Elizabeth’s decision to 'go faux' is the perfect reflection of the mood of the British public, the vast majority of whom detest cruel fur, and want nothing to do with it,” Claire Bass, executive director of Humane Society International/UK, said in a statement. "Our Head of State going fur-free sends a powerful message that fur is firmly out of fashion and does not belong with Brand Britain."
