The Meaning Of Veterans Day, From A Florida Gold Star Daughter

A Palm Beach County Gold Star daughter is spending Veterans Day unveiling memorial markers to honor people like her who lost a loved one in the armed forces.

Lauren Berkson will make a few appearances Monday as a way to try and educate the public.

"We want to educate the community the differences between Veterans Day and Memorial Day and Armed Forces Day."

She says it's okay to say "Happy Veterans Day," but people often say that for Memorial Day, which is meant to honor the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Veterans Day honors all of our U.S. veterans and Armed Forces Day honors current military members.

One other thing rubs her the wrong way...those "Veterans Day Sales."

"It's not about the sales and sometimes I think the commercialization of these holidays, people just don't think about the sacrifices."

Berkson says that in addition to the service member, their loved ones make daily sacrifices, including being away from their relative while they serve and losing someone either on the battlefield or to PTSD.

Lauren will dedicate the Gold Star Memorial markers in North Palm Beach and Palm Beach Gardens this morning.

They've been placed with the help of the non-profit Friends of Veterans.

North Palm's ceremony happens at 9 a.m. and Gardens' at 11 a.m.

If you'd like to help place more memorial markers:

Contributions will support construction of multiple Markers throughout Palm Beach County and the numerous programs and events surrounding the Memorial Monument and Markers.

Donations can be made to Friends of Veterans,Inc.
