15 Ways To Stay Entertained When The Power Is Out

15 Ways To Stay Entertained When The Power Goes Out During A Hurricane

(Assuming you read this before the power goes out)

That dreadful feeling when you're watching Netflix (In my case Ozark, highly recommend) and the power goes out.  You get up out of your chair,  calmly walk over to the fuse box.  Flip a few switches and nothing.  You have no power.  That feeling sinks into you, but then you calmly remind yourself that the power is out and it will return...eventually.

An hour passes and you start to dig into all your hurricane preparation food.  Hour two passes and you are nearly losing your mind because well technology rules our fun nowadays.

So what to do when the power goes out?  Here is a list of 25 ways to stay entertained when the power goes out.

Enjoy!

1.  Break out the board games!

We all have a board game or two hiding away in the back of a closet somewhere.  So what a better time to pull it out of the closet and play!  Don't have Monopoly, Checkers, Jenga or Chess?  Make up your own!

2.  Read A Book!

You know you have that one book sitting on the shelf that was gifted to you at Christmas.  Undoubtedly a self-help Tony Robbins book or someone's hand me down copy of Harry Potter.  Either way, grab it, get a candle and sit down for hours of entertainment.

3.  Lights Off, Pants Off, Dance Off!

Well, we know by now that you have already broken into your booze supplies, so why not use that energy, flip on that old iPod with your 2005 playlist and start the most epic dance off.  If you're feeling up to it lose the pants because it's going to get sweaty.  (It's Florida)

4.  Build a fort!

Grab all the blankets in your house, secure all the chairs you can find and build the most epic fort possible!  People won't you help build the fort?  Don't sweat it.  Do what I do, grab the most desired food item in the house, go in your fort and block off the rest of the world.

5.  Have a drink or two or three.

We both know that you might have stocked up on more alcohol than water and that's completely fine.  So why not take advantage of this time to have that extra glass of wine or that extra cold beer.  Chances are you don't have to work tomorrow.  Enjoy! (But still stay aware and safe)

6.  Write Something

You have always said to your friend's "yeah, one day I am going to write that steamy sexy book about my life".  Now is the time to do it.  Wait, you have never had those thoughts?  Well, that's ok!  Just pick up a pen and start writing.  Undoubtedly you will find something to write about that interests you.

7. Make a Movie! (While the battery lasts)

You know you have that one camera sitting around that you never use anymore because your phone now shoots video.  So do this, write a script, cast your actors and create a movie.  You probably will only have about 30-60 minutes of filming so make it count.

The best part is that once you're done and the battery dies.  You can't relive the video you created until months down the road when you finally remember the epic video you have created.   Sell it to Netflix and make MILLIONS!

8.  Act like an artist and draw!

So you have always wanted to pick up the paper and pencil and test your art skills outside of the office.  Now is the time to do it!  Draw a landscape, draw yourself from the reflection in the mirror or even ask to sketch someone else.  Not only could it be fun, but romantic as well.  As long as the person understands you are no Michelangelo.

9.  Hide N Seek!

Here is the game:  Pick one person to go into the bathroom and shut them in there for 60 seconds.  Everyone else needs to use those 60 seconds to find a hiding spot.  This game could last for hours.

10.  Clean and Organize

If you have reached the point where you are considering this option I suggest you seek out counseling after the storm.  Never the less it's a great time to do some cleaning and organize a few items in your house.  I don't recommend it, but do whatever floats your boat I guess.

11.  Play Poker Or Any Type Of Card Game

Play the game that has kept people entertained for decades without electricity....the game of poker!  Put some money on the line or put some articles of clothing on the line.  Either way it's going to be fun!

12.  Workout!

You have been saying for the past couple of weeks now that you really want to get back into the gym and get in shape.  Well now is the time!  What kind of workouts can you do at home?

Try a few of these:

  • Situps
  • Push Ups
  • Jumping Jacks
  • Squats
  • Burpees

13.  Meditate Like A Guru

Seems like all anyone is talking about is meditating nowadays.  So you know what?  Let's give it a try!

Basic Steps:

  • Sit on the floor or in a chair with your back straight.
  • Make sure the room is quiet
  • Let your body rest.
  • Breath in through the nose for 7 seconds, hold in the belly for 10 seconds, release slowly through mouth 7 seconds. - 10 Reps
  • Do this for 10-20 minutes.
  • Don't give up!

14.  Tell Scary Stories!

We all have a questionable story or two from our past that some would consider scary.  Heck, I often tell the story of my Uncle seeing Big Foot at least 3x throughout the year at random parties.  I am sure you have one story looming in the back of your head that sticks out.  Grab some wine and get to story telling.

15. Get "Busy"

When was the last time you and your significant other were in a room with no electricity and no PHONE?!  Take advantage of this time, shed some clothes and well you know.  Just please make sure you're in the privacy of your own room.  Can't imagine how weird this would be at a family members house.  Weirdos.

Most importantly Stay Safe!
