Selena Gomez is looking back on the creative process behind one of her biggest songs to date: 'Lose You To Love Me.' During a recent appearance on the Song Exploder podcast, Selena, along with her collaborators Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter, shared the inspiration behind the track, as well as the part of the recording process that Selena struggled with the most.

"This song alone represents what a lot of people who are heartbroken have gone through," Selena explained. "One of the hardest parts for me to sing in the song was the bridge. It's the ending of the song, and that's the part where it's like, 'You know, I guess this is goodbye forever for us.' And that killed me."

Selena trusted her collaborators "so naturally" that when Julia suggested making the song a ballad, Selena agreed right away. She just started crying. She was like, 'This is so beautiful. This is exactly what I wanted," Julia recalled of their first day in the studio together.

"When Julia came in and was talking about what her and Selena had discussed, it was really wanting to address like head-on what Selena had been through—the heartbreak, the emotional roller coaster, but really portray that she is on the other side of it," Justin added. "One of her superpowers is being so honest, and she's going to give you her life in the lyric, but then when she gets on the mic, she does the same thing. She tells you the story, she brings you through her truth, and that is what makes great art."

Selena opened up about the creative process for 'Lose You To Love Me' during an interview with Rolling Stone, as well, saying it was actually her idea to release 'Look at Her Now' right after. "They [my record] were kind of nervous about it, because they didn’t want to take away from either song," Selena explained. "I knew from the get-go that 'Lose You to Love Me' was going to be the bigger song, because I just felt it in my heart. I wanted people to take away that this was a journey and that it was completely closed. I don’t want people to see me as just sad and hurt. I didn’t want that anymore. I wanted people to know that I experienced something real, and that part of me is over."

While it was important for Selena to publicly close the book on her decade-long on-again-off-again relationship with Justin Bieber, she also wanted to show her fans where she is now with her third album Rare. When working on Rare, Selena said she "focused on creating more songs that were lyrically about transformation and vulnerability and heartbreak. It felt like [the material] was really, really strong, and I was very happy about it. I think that becoming more involved than I ever have been [in the making of the album] helped me gain confidence and empowered me completely. I took control over what I was going to say, what I was going to do."
