As Floridians prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July and the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary, state leaders are encouraging residents to enjoy the festivities while keeping safety top of mind.

Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson, alongside the Florida Forest Service, is urging caution during holiday celebrations that often include fireworks, outdoor grilling, and campfires. While recent summer rains have eased drought conditions across much of the state, officials warn that wildfire risks have not disappeared.

“The past six months have been one of the state’s busiest fire seasons in recent memory,” Simpson said. “Though recent rains have helped rein in drought conditions, the risk of wildfire still exists in Florida and needs to be taken seriously.”

Active Wildfire Season

State data shows that since January 1, more than 2,440 wildfires have burned over 176,000 acres across Florida. The elevated wildfire activity followed dry conditions late in 2025, setting the stage for a particularly active fire season.

Florida Forest Service Director Rick Dolan said the arrival of the summer rainy season has helped lift many county burn bans, but fire danger persists.

“We continue to have wildfire flare-ups around the state,” Dolan said. “We want to urge everyone to be mindful when burning or using fireworks near a wooded area.”

Fireworks Safety Remains Critical

Officials emphasize that fireworks, while a centerpiece of Independence Day celebrations, can quickly spark dangerous fires — particularly in dry vegetation or wooded areas.

Residents are encouraged to check local laws and restrictions before using fireworks, as regulations can vary by county. Local fire departments and the State Fire Marshal’s Office can provide guidance.

The Florida Forest Service is offering several reminders for those planning to celebrate outdoors:

Light fireworks in a cleared area free of dry grass or debris
Keep a water source nearby in case of emergency
Aim fireworks away from people, homes, and wooded areas
Never use homemade fireworks
Dispose of used fireworks in a bucket of water
Keep matches, lighters, and fireworks away from children
Never leave fires unattended and ensure they are completely extinguished
Clear debris from around grills, campfires, and fire pits
Report any fire immediately by calling 9-1-1

Reducing Wildfire Risk

Beyond holiday precautions, officials say there are simple steps residents can take year-round to lower wildfire risks. These include creating defensible space around homes, properly burning yard waste, and reporting suspicious activity that could lead to arson.

The Florida Forest Service, a division of the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, manages more than 1 million acres of state forest land and assists with stewardship across over 17 million acres of private and community forests statewide. The agency also plays a critical role in wildfire prevention and response.

As celebrations approach, Simpson said the goal is for Floridians to enjoy the holiday while protecting their communities and first responders.

“As we celebrate with fun, fireworks, and outdoor cookouts,” he said, “let us do so responsibly to keep our communities safe.”
