Florida's Unemployment Rate Increases In September

Florida's jobless rate is going in the wrong direction, thanks to the continuing coronavirus pandemic.

Statewide, the rate was 7.6 percent in September. That's up 3-tenths of a percent from August and 4.7 percent from a year ago.

But the numbers in some Florida counties are nearly double that, according to Adrienne Johnston at the state Department of Economic Opportunity.

"Osceola County had the highest unemployment rate with 13.3 percent, followed by Miami-Dade County with 13.0 percent."

These numbers don't reflect the thousands of jobs cut by Disney World in recent weeks.

In some counties, the unemployment rate actually dropped month-over-month. In Palm Beach, for example, the September rate was 7.0 percent, down from 7.9% in August. And while Osceola County, in the Kissimmee area, has the highest rate, it's actually lower than the rate in August, when it was 14.8 percent. Miami-Dade's 13 percent was an increase from the August rate of 8.0 percent.

The statewide number was lower than the national rate of 7.9 percent.
