A Florida Democrat wants to tweak the state's Red Flag law.
Senator Lori Berman of Palm Beach County is filing a bill in Tallahassee that would make it to where police are no longer the only ones who can go before a judge to have someone's guns taken.
"What if it's a situation where the person is threatening suicide? They may not want law enforcement to have to be involved. They may want to just simply go to court themselves."
But Chief Deputy John Budenseik with the Martin County Sheriff's Office says that law enforcement needs to be included in that process.
Florida's Red Flag law has been used more than 9,000 times since it went into effect four years ago.
Berman will be filing her bill ahead of the Legislative Session in March.
