Fort Myers, FL - A former Southwest Florida deputy has been arrested for allegedly stealing money from people during traffic stops.

Authorities say former Lee County Sheriff's deputy Tyrese Jackson has been arrested on multiple charges of theft and misconduct after allegedly stealing money from people during traffic stops.

Police say Jackson is accused of targeting Hispanics, particularly those with limited English proficiency, and manipulating his body-worn camera to conceal his crimes.

Sheriff Carmine Marceno spoke to NBC 2 News regarding Jackson's arrest, telling the news outlet “It disgusts me when one of the people I consider a family member betrays the trust of the great residents of Lee County and tarnishes the badge. Jackson will be held accountable for his actions and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office will continue to provide a concierge level of service.”

An extensive review of body camera footage uncovered evidence of Jackson's alleged misconduct.

The sheriff's office says the former deputy resigned and fled to Maryland before being apprehended and extradited to Lee County.
