The Palm Beach County School District is among 45 in Florida that are joining a nationwide lawsuit against social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube.

The lawsuit filed in California claims children are now experiencing the most serious mental health crisis their age group has ever faced.

It accuses social media companies of knowingly designing addictive platforms that could damage a child's mental health.

Other area school districts also joining the suit include St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties. Martin County School District officials say they believe this should be handled on the local level.

Joining the lawsuit doesn't cost the school districts any money and they could be part of an eventual settlement.
