A gift card scam unlike others on the Treasure Coast.

Port St. Lucie Police say a couple was busted for swapping out real gift cards at Publix for fake ones and had it set up to where when the cards were activated at the register, the money went directly to them.

Officers say 42-year-old Jeffrey Castillo and 28-year-old Janel Castillo were busted at a Publix on Becker Road after they had previously pulled off the crime at two other locations, including a Martin County Publix.

The shoppers purchasing the gift cards were ripped off because the phony cards lacked a security code, which prevented them from obtaining the funds.

Investigators say Jeffrey Castillo was already out on bond at the time of the crime.
