(Miami, FL) - There is a reported mosquito infestation around Alligator Alcatraz located deep in the Everglades.

The detention facility is designed to house 3000 detainees in large tents surrounded by chain link fences. The outdoor setup provides little protection from the elements and mosquitoes.

Florida International University (FIU) infectious diseases expert Dr. Aileen Marty says officials need to fumigate the area to protect detainees and prevent disease spread.

Dr. Marty says currently there is no outbreak of malaria or Dengue fever, but newly arrived migrants may be carrying a pathogen that can be spread by a mosquito bite.

According to Marty, "Currently there is no outbreak of malaria or Dengue fever, but newly arrived migrants may be carrying a pathogen that can be spread by a mosquito bite."

She adds, detainees should get health checks and vaccinations to reduce the risk of disease transmission by mosquitoes.

The state monitors mosquito populations and disease activity weekly to inform the public and health officials, according to Dr. Marty.
